How to keep yourself positive in adversities?

Updated: May 16

Dealing with adversities can be challenging. There are various strategies that can help you maintain a positive mindset even when things get tough. Here is our original practical approach to help you keep up your self-belief

In brief, the strategy involves 4 steps:

  1. Find the one thing you did right even when at your worst.

  2. Take help from others to find your "right"

  3. Note it somewhere. Writing/journaling may help.

  4. Read/remind yourself of it when in self-doubts.

Let us elaborate on it one by one.

Step 1: Find the one thing you did right even when at your worst.

When things are not going well, it can be easy to focus on what went wrong or what you could have done differently. Instead, try to identify one thing that you did well or that worked out despite the difficult circumstances. Maybe you showed up to work even though you were dealing with a personal crisis, or managed to volunteer/donate to a cause when despite unexpected setbacks. Find the one thing about you that's beyond success and failure, something that's you all the time. It could be your commitment, your belief in love or hard work, something you believe in and do every time, every day.

When they say "you are beyond your success and failures" this belief is what they mean.

Whatever it is, give yourself credit for that accomplishment and remind yourself of it when you start to doubt yourself.

Step 2: Take help from others to find your "right"

Adversity can be isolating, but it's important to remember that you don't have to face it alone. Reach out to friends, family, or a mental health professional for support and guidance. Talking to others about what you're going through can help you gain perspective and feel less alone.

Along with finding solace, seek their help to find your right. All of us have blind spots in our personalities which our closest people, friends, family, and colleagues may notice about us. Talk to them and ask them about the one thing you do right every time. This helps to align your perception of yourself with others' perceptions about you. When you see why others love you, hopefully, you will find love for yourself too!

Step 3: Note it somewhere. Writing/journaling may help.

It can be hard to feel positive when everything seems to be going wrong, but taking time to focus on the things you're grateful for can help shift your mindset. There are different ways of feeling gratitude like listing three things you're thankful for each day or thinking about something positive that happened recently. This can help you cultivate a sense of gratitude and optimism, even when things are difficult.

Not just other things and people, but appreciate yourself and the right things you do that make you proud of yourself. Journaling or writing can be an effective way to process your thoughts and feelings and gain clarity about what's going on. You might write about what you're experiencing, what you're learning from the situation or any positive moments or insights you've had. This can help you make sense of what's happening and cultivate a sense of gratitude and optimism, even when things are difficult.

Step 4: Read/remind yourself of it when in self-doubts.

When in self-doubt, remind yourself of the things you observed about yourself in the above steps. If you have written it somewhere, read it out to yourself.

This thing about you makes you unique. It isn't reading out a generic self-affirmation. This is you finding your self-belief, your uniqueness. This good in you in the worst of situations makes you the best person in the world!

This is you. Bad are the times, not you.

This is why your people love you.

This is why you should love yourself too.
